Government Shutdown Sparks Airport Delays Across the U.S.

As the partial government shutdown extends into its fourth week, U.S. airports are experiencing significant pressure at TSA checkpoints. Numerous airports are now advising passengers to arrive much earlier than usual for security screenings, as staff shortages lead to increased congestion and longer wait times.

On Friday, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) urged travelers to allow up to three hours before their scheduled flights. Social media platforms were flooded with photos and videos from passengers depicting lines extending from the terminal building into parking areas. Ava Brendgord, a reporter for KXAN News, shared a video of the extensive queue at AUS around 5 a.m. local time.

Similar scenes have been observed across many airports this week. The situation could potentially worsen over the weekend as Americans embark on Spring Break travel. TSA agents are also facing their first paycheck delay, which may lead to increased absenteeism.

While wait times haven't reached the extreme levels seen at Houston Hobby Airport (HOU) last weekend, where some passengers experienced three-hour delays, significant congestion was evident at several airports on Friday morning. A Business Insider employee traveling from LaGuardia Airport (LGA) reported a lengthy line, and at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), wait times exceeded 20 minutes at most TSA screening points.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), the world's busiest airport by passenger volume, anticipates serving 250,000 travelers this weekend and is also recommending passengers arrive three hours early.

How to Check TSA Wait Times

The most effective strategy to avoid missing your flight is to arrive at the airport well in advance. Many airports are currently advising travelers to arrive up to three hours before their departure.

For real-time wait time information, many major airports, including Atlanta (ATL), Houston (HOU), JFK, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), and Denver International Airport (DEN), provide live updates on their official websites.

These airport websites often offer specific details, such as DFW's site which displays wait times for each individual checkpoint.

Alternatively, travelers can utilize the MyTSA mobile app. This app provides estimated wait times in 15-minute intervals based on average checkpoint data. However, it is important to note that the app may rely on historical data if live information is unavailable. The TSA has also indicated that its systems are not being actively managed during the partial shutdown, which could affect the timeliness of app updates.
